Tottenham host Chelsea at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the second leg of their Carabao Cup Semi-Final fixture. Chelsea goes into the game with a 2:0 lead after a dominant display over their North London rivals. They will look to carry that performance into the second leg to get their ticket to the final at Wembley. Tottenham will be looking for a much-improved display after an extremely disappointing performance last time out, particularly in the first half.
Why You Should Be Watching
Tottenham vs Chelsea is always a fiercely fought match as a London Derby and this shouldn’t be any different. You can expect to see a good atmosphere at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and this can only positively impact the play on the pitch.
Going into the game with a 2 goal deficit against them from the start. We can expect Tottenham to perhaps be more expansive and open as they chase goals to get themselves back into the tie. On the other hand, we may see more space for Chelsea attackers to find themselves in, meaning we could see a fair few goals as both teams will carry attacking threats and plenty of quality.
Also, it’s a cup semi-final which means plenty of drama could unfold as both sides battle it out to reach the first final of the 2021/22 season.
Tottenham will be without Korean star Heung-Min Son after a leg injury. Son picked up that at Stamford Bridge in the first leg and is likely to miss the rest of this month’s action.
Christian Romero remains out as he continues his comeback from his long spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
Eric Dier may be a doubt after he picked up a calf injury in training on Saturday.
Steven Bergwijn isn’t expected to be involved as he has had a recent injury and is also heavily linked with a move away from the North London club.
Tanguy Ndombele is expected to have very little involvement on Wednesday night after his disappointing performance against and then the actions of the Frenchman when being subbed off that has caused a big backlash against him from supporters and people within the club.
Sergio Reguilon may return to face the Blues after missing the previous leg due to an injury that was picked in Tottenham’s last Premier League game against Watford.
Defense: Emerson Royal, Sanchez, Dier, Davies, Reguilon
Midfield: Skipp, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso
Attack: Lucas Moura, Harry Kane.
Edouard Mendy will miss the game as he is away with Senegal at the Africa Cup Of Nations.
Thiago Silva and N’golo Kante may return in time to be in contention for this match after Covid troubles at the club.
Trevoh Chalobah may be a doubt after being taken off in their last Premier League match against Liverpool due to injury.
Reece James remains out of action with a torn hamstring and is expected to miss many weeks.
Ben Chilwell will remain out with his ACL knee injury.
Defense : Azpilicueta , Sarr , Rudiger , Alonso
Midfield: Ziyech, Saul, Jorginho
Attack : Mount , Havertz , Lukaku.
Players To Watch Out For
With Heung-Min Son being out injured. There will be a lot of pressure on Lucas Moura to be firing on all cylinders for Tottenham alongside Harry Kane. Lucas has been in strong form since the arrival of Antonio Conte and he will need to carry that on if Spurs are to have a much-attacking threat on Wednesday night.
The Brazilian came on as a second-half substitute to save Tottenham from an embarrassing defeat against lower league side Morecambe in the FA Cup, scoring the winning goal in what turned out to be a 3:1 win.
There is a chance that we could see Lucas pair up with Harry Kane in a front two against Conte’s old side. With Bergwijn a doubt, Son out injured and Bryan Gil yet to break into the first team, a 3-5-2 may be a real possibility for Tottenham.
Oliver Skipp was one of the few players to show promise in last week’s first leg and this could be another chance for Skipp to show everyone what he is made of.
Skipp was brought on as a second-half substitute against Morecambe so after a good amount of rest. He is almost a guarantee to start this match.
Skipp will be key for that midfield battle that Spurs lost in the 1st leg. However, if they switch to a 3-5-2, they would have the extra man to back up the other two and maybe come out on top. With his breaking up of the play, quick releases of the ball, and brilliant ball retention, Oliver Skipp has become a crucial figure of that Tottenham Hotspur midfield setup this season.
After a strong performance in last week’s outing at Stamford Bridge and a goal against Chesterfield in the FA Cup ,Hakim Ziyech will be looking to continue his good run of form. After getting the better of every Tottenham player he faced on the right-hand side last week. Ziyech will certainly have confidence that he can make an impact Wednesday night.
Everyone saw his quality at Ajax before his move from Amsterdam over to West London but we are yet to see it translate into his time in England as of yet. However, without the end product, we have seen from the Moroccan in the past, we saw how good he can be last week as he ran the Tottenham defense ragged last week.
With Reece James still out, there is a possibility that we could see him play in the right wing-back role rather than a role on the right side of an attacking three.
Despite not having too much to deal with, Malang Sarr put in a very confident and assertive performance in the first leg last week and is expected to play in the second leg too.
After being out on loan at Porto last season. Sarr has waited a long time to have a chance at Chelsea but in recent weeks he has been able to show that he belongs at Chelsea in his positive performances in cup competitions.
If Sarr is to put in another solid performance this time out. This would certainly send a strong message to Thomas Tuchel for when he is selecting his team. Two dominant defensive displays against Harry Kane are rare to come by so it would certainly represent Sarr’s quality at still a very young age if he were to play well again.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting game. Chelsea going in as strong favorites to get over the line and get themselves to Wembley as they already hold a 2:0 lead. However, Tottenham has looked stronger under Antonio Conte, and if their home crowd can be loud as they have been on occasions before and Spurs show a much stronger performance than last time out when they have a chance of getting back into the tie.
